Start your journey in Chehalis and follow the White Pass Scenic Byway through lakes, forests, and charming small towns. Enjoy stops at Mayfield and Riffe Lakes, a relaxing lunch in Morton, and an easy nature walk before arriving in Packwood. Day two brings alpine views, Mount Rainier highlights, and a scenic return filled with unforgettable viewpoints and peaceful stops.
The White Pass Scenic Byway is open year-round. This drive is usually snow-free from the end of May through October. Forest road closures take place off the Byway each winter.

Day 1: Chehalis to Packwood
Start in downtown Chehalis and head east on US-12 E toward Morton. Continue along US-12, following signs for Mossyrock and Randle.
For lake views, take a short detour. Turn left onto WA-122 toward Mossyrock to access Mayfield Lake or continue on US-12 for access to Riffe Lake viewpoints
Rejoin US-12 E and continue to Morton for lunch.
After Morton, stay on US-12 E. For the Woods Creek Watchable Wildlife Trail,turn onto Kiona Road near Randle and follow signs to the trailhead.
Return to US-12 E and continue east to Packwood.
Day 2: Packwood to White Pass & Return
From Packwood, continue east on US-12 E toward White Pass. Follow US-12 through scenic viewpoints up to the summit.
For Mount Rainier access:
Turn left onto WA-123 N (Cayuse Pass) toward the park (seasonal). Follow signs to Box Canyon and Reflection Lakes via Stevens Canyon Road (when open). Return by heading back west on US-12 W toward Packwood, Randle, Morton, and Chehalis.

Lunch – Grab a bite in Morton
Enjoy a relaxed lunch in Morton or pick up supplies to create your own picnic outdoors.
Late Morning – Short Hike Option
Take a scenic detour to the Woods Creek Watchable Wildlife Trail for an easy, peaceful walk through the forest. It’s perfect for families and visitors of all ages to enjoy nature and local wildlife.
Afternoon – Arrive in Packwood
Check into a cozy cabin or lodge. Spend the afternoon browsing the local shops or relaxing with mountain views.
Evening – Unwind
Enjoy dinner in Packwood and a quiet evening under the stars. This area is known for its peaceful, small-town feel.

Mid-Morning – Experience Nature
Visit Mount Rainier National Park and enjoy a drive to favorite park sites, including Box Canyon and Reflection Lakes. **NOTE** Check road conditions for Highway 123/Cayuse Pass and Stevens Canyon Road, which typically reopen mid-late spring.
Lunch – Picnic with a View
Pack a picnic or grab something in Packwood before heading out. There are plenty of scenic pull-offs and day-use campground areas perfect for a relaxing lunch.
Afternoon – Head Back West
Make your way back along the Byway, stopping at any favorite viewpoints you may have missed on the way up.
